Stories

Living in St. Paul’s West 7th Neighborhood

Live in the heart of the West Seventh neighborhood, where there’s a rich tapestry of immigrant history, woven by several waves of newcomers to the area. The neighborhood's story begins with the industrious Germans of the 1860s, who established thriving breweries that became integral to the community's identity.

Following the Germans, came the vibrant influx of Poles and Czechs in the 1870s, adding layers of cultural diversity to the neighborhood. By the 1880s, the area welcomed Irish, German, and Scandinavian immigrants, each contributing their traditions and heritage to the evolving fabric of the community.

As the 20th century dawned, a new chapter unfolded with the arrival of Italian immigrants from southern Italy, drawn to the neighborhood's promise of opportunity. Settling primarily in the old Polish levee beneath the High Bridge, they added a distinct flavor to the neighborhood.

However, challenges emerged with constant flooding and the construction prompted many Italians to seek new horizons by the 1950s. Despite these challenges, the spirit of resilience and community endured.

In more recent times, the vibrant presence of Mexican immigrants has infused the West Seventh neighborhood with renewed energy and vitality, further enriching its cultural landscape.

The West Seventh neighborhood stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of diverse communities, whose stories continue to shape and define the essence of this historic enclave.

Today, many people choose to live in apartments in the West 7th area of St. Paul because there’s never a lack of things to do, places to try or people to meet.
